How the Kiwi Lost his Wings
Once upon a time in the native New Zealand forest Tane Mahuta was walk through the forest when he saw the trees and the bushes were being eaten by worms and caterpillars.
So he call up to the birds in the tree, “Tui will you come down from the trees to the ground?”
So tui looked from the tree to the ground and said, “No it is too dark down there and scary!”
“Pukeko will you come down to the forest floor?”
Pukeko looked down from the trees and said “No it is too wet down on the forest floor.”
“Kiwi will you come and save the forest floor?” called Tane Mahuta.
Kiwi said, “YES I will come down to the forest floor and eat the bugs for you Tane Mahuta.”
“Thank you kiwi.Tui, because you said that it is too scary and dark down on the forest floor you now will wear two white feather as the mark of a coward. Pukeko because you did not want to get your feet wet you will now live in the swamp forever. Kiwi for being the only one to say yes we will make you the most loved bird ever.”
